Macleod has defied Diamond Creek’s season-long dictatorship in Barclay Shield by posting 7/275 at Plenty Park. The Eagles won the toss, backed themselves in against the unbeaten Creek and delivered their best batting performance of the season. Brothers Rob and Tim Wise added another chapter to their glittering careers by compiling 93 and 56 respectively with dangerman Richard Johnson stacking an unbeaten 50 to the total.
A valiant 86 from Brad Nihill saw Heidelberg grind its way into a respectable position against Lower Plenty come stumps. Nihill came to the crease with his side at 1/0 and fought tooth-and-claw to make Heidelberg’s odds better and better. With John Meekins and Josh Henkel each claiming a pair of early wickets, Nihill found support in experienced heads Pete Cashen and Justin Whitcher to set the Lions a chase of 208 next Saturday.
Research Eltham Collegians ended the first day of its Grand Final with its foot on the throat of Laurimar. Collegians’ spearheads Jack Sassella (4/40) and Josh Turner (3/26) mowed through Laurimar’s in-form batting line-up to reduce their side’s run chase to 145. With 15 overs still to bat, Collegian opener Dale Lander went on the offensive, striking 35 runs to put his side in the commanding position of 0/53 at stumps.
